Shalimar Garden: The Abode of Love

Location: Shalimar Garden, also known as Shalimar Bagh, is situated on the right bank of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. It is approximately 15 kilometers from the city center.

Historical Significance: Built in 1619 by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan, Shalimar Garden is one of the finest examples of Mughal horticulture and architecture. The name “Shalimar” is derived from Sanskrit, meaning “Abode of Love.”

Design and Architecture: Shalimar Garden follows the classic Persian garden layout, known as Charbagh, which is divided into four parts by walkways or flowing water. The garden is designed on a rectangular plan with three terraces, each rising one above the other.

Key Features:

• Terraces: The three terraces have distinct features. The first terrace is the public garden (Diwan-e-Aam), the second is the emperor’s garden (Diwan-e-Khas), and the third terrace, the most private, was reserved for the royal ladies.
• Water Channels: Central to the garden’s design is the long canal, Shah Nahar, which runs through its middle, adorned with fountains and shaded by tall Chinar trees.
• Pavilions: The garden includes several elegant pavilions and marble structures, with the Black Pavilion (Black Pavilion) being the most notable, featuring intricate craftsmanship and stunning views.
